Birth was registered at Chorlton, just south of Crewe. GM said she was born in Manchester - which is in the right direction at least.

Note on Marriage to Frank George KEMPSON: Marriage was witnessed by Fred and Trissie Holloway. Lived at 47 Hutton Street at the time their marriage - which no longer exists. It may have been replaced with Hutton Road which is new houses.
Lived in 32 Washwood Heath Road, Birmingham in 1901 which is now (Aug 2004) a Jet petrol station.

Probate was granted to Emily - amount was 985 pounds.

22 Frederick Edward HOLLOWAY36 (1839-1906) [104].

Born Q3 1839, Stoulton, Worcestershire.36,37,38 Marr Elizabeth Jane WILLIAMS 8 Jun 1862, Harborne Parish Church, Harborne, Birmingham.39 Died 31 Mar 1906, 49 Waterloo Road, Smethwick, Birmingham.40 Cause: Cancer of the pancreas. Buried Apr 1906, Grave 4652, Yardley Cemetery. No headstone.

This was the Frederick who was the recipient of the letters from Ralph Copeland, 3rd Astronomer Royal for Scotland. He was 67 when he died in 31 March 1906.

He was born in Stoulton, as were some of his brother(s) and where his father lived for a time. There is a 1901 census entry for a Frederick Holloway that fits for age and birth-place.

The 1891 census records him, wife Elizabeth, and children Emily, Eliza, Lavinia, Ralph and Ethel all living at home at 19 Newdegate, Aston.

An Engine Turner is/was someone who uses machines (e.g. lathes) to engrave patterns on metal. A typical application is in silver or jewellery work.

It would seem that Fred worked at Gorton Foundry around 1863. This was where Beyer-Peacock made locomotives until it was eventually closed in 1966. Gorton is now part of Manchester. This is probably where he met Ralph Copeland who was also an apprentice there at the time.

He is buried in grave 4652 in Yardley Cemetery (area 8), along with his wife, Elizabeth who survived him until 1922 and Harry Sampson, who died in 1952. Harry's son Ralph Sampson was Elizabeth Percival's (nee Kempson) cousin, who lived at 2308 Coventry Road in Birmingham. Harry's wife was Tissie Holloway. Ralph's wife was Dorothy (who I met once and knew as Aunty Dore.) They had two sons, Colin and Norman. Norman had Down's syndrome. I met him once at Virginia Water - I think it was when I was travelling to Italy to take part in Europatrol in 1973(?).

44 Edward HOLLOWAY39 (c. 1816-1885) [739].

Born c. 1816, Wick, Worcestershire.6 Christened 4 Jan 1818, Wick, Worcestershire. Marr Elizabeth SMITH 5 Nov 1837, Stoulton, Worcestershire.41 Died 14 Feb 1885, 23 Herbert Road, Aston, Birmingham.42

I have found a reference to him in the 1850 Post Office directory for the area - he is listed as a Shoemaker in Stoulton.

He and family appear to have moved to Norton, Worcestershire, which is the next village from Stoulton and then to 110 Spring Hill, Birmingham, Warwickshire where a number of their children were born. This would seem to have been between 1850 and 1853.

There is an entry in the 1863 Birmingham Directory (Post Office I think) for an Edward Holloway, Bootmaker at 43 Dean Street. He turns up again in 1867 at another address, 89 Charles Henry St. still in Birmingham.

The original transcript of the 1861 census on 1837online.com contains a number of errors - birthplaces Stanton instead of Stoulton. Real Glue Maker instead of Boot and Shoe Maker. John's age as 12 instead of 20.

There is a record of a Christening of Edward Holloway in Wick near Pershore in the IGI.
Son of John Holloway and Ann - 4 Jan 1818. A John Holloway married Ann Abell 9 Aug 1808 according to the IGI at Wick. The only Holloway, Hollaway and Hallaway records relate to this couple - so without it being concrete, I think there's a good chance that this is the right one. I'll go with it for now.

Just to confuse things a bit further, there were some children born to Edward Holloway and Olivia in Stoulton around the same period as those born to Edward and Elizabeth. I have no reason to believe it is the same Edward - but at the same time I have no other Edward Holloway to link it to.

45 Elizabeth SMITH (c. 1816-1889) [868].

Born c. 1816, Stoulton, Worcestershire.6 Died 31 Jan 1889, 47 Herbert Road, Birmingham.43 Cause: Fatty Degeneration of Heart, Syncope.

I am pretty certain that the death date and certificate are for the rfight Elizabeth Holloway - the age is right and it mentions that she is Edward's widow. The only slight confusion is that he is quoted as a Commission Agent - rather than a shoemaker. The death was registered by a James Cotton, son in law. Both lived at 47 Herbert Road - where as Edward died at 23 Herbert Road. Presumably they all lived quite close together!

Note on Marriage to Edward HOLLOWAY: I got this marriage date from the IGI index - but it doesn't show up in the GRO index for Q4 1837. Is this because it's in the Parish Register?

Candidate death date - Q1 1889 aged 73. Aston 6D 169.

23 Elizabeth Jane WILLIAMS39 (c. 1835-1922) [105].

Born c. 1835, Handsworth, Staffs. Died 9 Jan 1922.43 Buried 14 Jan 1922, Yardley Cemetery (Family Grave).

63 in 1901 according to the census?? Doesn't quite tie up. Died aged 86 in Jan 1922 - makes dob 1835 and 65 or maybe 64 in 1901 census.
Buried in Grave 4652 in Yardley cemetery with her husband Fred (1906) and Harry Sampson (1952) Burial index number is 19316.

Liber status animarum (a statement on the spiritual condition of the Parish)

"Elizabeth Johnson a convert, wife to George Johnson a protestant at Lincoln Flatts, a communicant she has yet no child. She is the daughter of the late Henry Anderton."

Also "Elizabeth Anderton relict of the late Henry Anderton a protestant. She returned to the catholic religion and a communicant"

(I think Henry Anderton in the above paragraph should read George Johnson, or is it me being thick? Alternatively relict should read Daughter?)

Elizabeth was a Wesleyan for a while.

The Mitchell, Dunlop and Young families moved en masse to Edinburgh somewhere between 1878 and 1881. They all lived together (14 or 15 of them) at 29 Thistle Street.
His death certificate refers to another document - Vol XIV p114 2 Sep 1904 - presumably an inquest or similar.8

56 John YOUNG (c. 1805-1875) [1081].

Born c. 1805. Marr Margaret DOAK 5 Mar 1830, Kilwinning. Died 22 Jan 1875, Blair Iron Works, Dalry, Ayr.61,62 Cause: Ulceration of stomach.

113 Margaret ROBERTSON ( - ) [1976].

57 Margaret DOAK63 (bef1816-bef1875) [1082].

Born bef 1816. Died bef 1875.

Surname is illegible on their son James's marriage certificate. There is a Margaret Doak married a John Young in Kilwinning on 5 Mar 1830. Seems like a probable link since there don't seem to be any other Margaret Doaks marrying John Youngs in the right timeframe, although there is a big gap between the birth of the first two children and James. There may be other children in between - or it may be the wrong marriage!

Spelling is Doack on James's birth entry, Deak on Martha's.

Possible Christening - Girvan 18 Dec 1814 - Robert Doack and Mary McCredie - probably unlikely since a Margaret Doack married James McCredie in 1835 in Ballantrae.

Another birth - 9 Sep 1806 in Girvan to Gilbert Doak and Margaret Hunter
Another one - 6 Mar 1796 in Girvan to Gilbert Doak and Margaret Peacock.

29 Catherine MITCHELL64 (1855-1941) [498].

Born 2 Dec 1855, Highfield, Dalry, Ayr.64 Died 15 Jul 1941, 6 Lorne Street, Leith, Edinburgh.65 Cause: Myocardial degeneration.

Catherine was her parents 4th child - 2 previous boys had died, one girl still alive at the time of her birth.

Death was registered by her daughter Margaret Donaldson.64

Note on Marriage to James YOUNG: Could be Spanish blood in here somewhere - a Spanish Galleon from the Armada was wrecked in Tobermory bay. Agnes MacFarlane - Catherine's mother came from Mull.

Note - Mabel's notes had her maiden name as McLean - but this is plainly wrong.

Born 5 Jun 1800, Kattens, Coupar-Angus.66 Died 19 Oct 1867, Glasgow.66,74 Cause: Typhus.

Original name was Elizabeth. Surname appears in parish records as Lowson, but later in William Mitchell's family record as Lawson.
She died in the fever hospital - at the time she was resident at 32 Great Dovehill in Glasgow.

IGI records show her birth in 1797 at Kettins - which doesn't tie up with the family record or census.

Note on Marriage to William MITCHELL: In 1861 they lived at 4 Argyle Place, Maryhill, Glasgow.

234 John LAWSON74 ( - ) [1457].

235 Barbara NISH41,74 ( - ) [1458].

Surname is very hard to make out on Eliza Lawson's death certificate - Clare Hughes-Cross has suggested it is Nish. IGI records suggest Niesh.

59 Agnes Mary MACFARLANE (c. 1829-1913) [1080].

Born c. 1829, Isle of Mull, Argyll, Scotland. Died 20 Mar 1913, Ardtun, Bunessan, Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon, Argyll, (Mull) , Scotland. Cause: Heart Disease.

Note on Marriage to John MACFARLANE: Probably the right marriage - found in IGI index, not Scotland on line.

15 Helen Thompson BANKS75 (1883- ) [473].

Born 14 Oct 1883, Bathfield House, Leith.75

Note on Marriage to Charles Mitchell YOUNG: 27 Trinity Crescent was Helen Banks home
Marriage was witnessed by Robert Mitchell Young - brother? and Charlotte Calder Banks - sister?
They obviously continued to live here after the death of Mary Banks (nee Cormack) in 1924.

30 Donald BANKS76 (1851-1892) [477].

Born 8 Jun 1851, Caithness. Christened 8 Jun 1851. Marr Mary Ann CORMACK 3 Nov 1880, Olrig, Caithness.76,77 Died 31 May 1892, At sea. Ship called Ashbank disappeared on a voyage from Algoa Bay in South Africa to Newcastle, NSW.78 Cause: Drowned.

Died age 40 - recorded in Marine Register.
His ship was the Ashbank, which went missing after setting sail from Algoa bay in South Africa bound for Newcastle in New South Wales.
He was recorded as the 1st Mate - while other family records have suggested he was a captain - I suspect this was wishful thinking - or perhaps he had achieved the qualification without the post. The captain of this particular ship - a four steel masted barque - was J. Oates. It was one of three sister ships built for ANDREW WEIR SHIPPING & TRADING CO. LTD (BANK LINE) in 1891. It was built in Greenock by Russell & Co.

Recorded in 1881 census as widowed, crofter in West Dunnet, age 58 - where
It looks like she has a 5 year old adopted child (Jessie Scott) from Edinburgh living with her, recorded as a scholar. There is no sign of her in the 1891 or 1901 census and so far no sign of a death certificate or a definite birth record.

There is a Charlotte Calder recorded as born 19 Apr 1820 in Dunnet to Donald Calder and Margaret Nicolson - but that doesn't fit with being 58 in the 1881 census. It does however fit with her eldest children being called Margaret and Donald (which was also her husband's name) and is therefore a strong candidate.

She is in the 1841 census age 15!

And the 1861 census age 37.

Supposedly known as the Sympathetic Laird because he didn't press people for their rent.
Seems somewhat dubious, since he is recorded as a shoemaker! If anything this might possibly refer to his father who did at least own some land. Perhaps David inherited this and had tenants?

Died aged 64 according to his death certificate - but would be 65 if christening date is correct.

In 1851 census he is shown as a lodger with William and Catherine Waters in Castletown to New Libmister road. He was born in Bower.

Name is mis-spelt as David Cormach in marriage entry in Scotlandspeople

In 1841 census shown as living with parents Alexander Cormack and Hellen Reach. Address is shown as Brabsterdorran. Children George, Margaret and Alexander are also living there.

It is not certain that the people I have identified as his parents are the right ones. Dates don't quite tie up with ages - but there are so many inconsistencies in the records it's still possible they're correct.

He is recorded as 62 in 1851 census. Wife Helen is recorded as 50 in 1851 census.
George, Margaret and Alexander are still at home.
Address is Hill of Brabster

Farmer of 20 acres employing 3 labourers.

249 Margaret MCKAY ( - ) [1104].

Uncertain.

125 Hellen REACH (c. 1803-1873) [1065].

Born c. 1803, Wick, Caithness. Died 12 Sep 1873, Brabster, Bower, Caithness.93 Cause: Old age.

Surname on David Cormack's death certificate is very hard to read. I think this is Nelly Reach as recorded in another document I found on the web - with David's birth in 1826 - which would seem to be a year too early.

She is variously recorded as Hellen, Helen, Ellen, Nell and Nellie. Her marriage entry is recorded as Reoch! On her son Alexander's death certificate she is recorded as Ellen Raich.

Date of birth is uncertain. Age on death certificate is 69 - making dob about 1803 or 1804.

In the 1841 census she is recorded as age 39, born in Caithness - but the ages are notoriously unreliable in this census. If age is correct, dob would be about 1802 or 1803.

In 1851 she is recorded as age 50.

Her parents names were George Reach and Helen - surname uncertain but not recorded on death certificate.

There is a Helen Reach, born in Wick, to George Reach and Helen Bain on 23 Jun 1796. This would just about be possible in terms of age. They had a number of children.

John 1793
Note - Helen Bain is sometimes recorded as Hellen and Ellen - tenuous perhaps, but interesting commonality which perhaps strengthens the possibility.
I wonder if the first Helen perhaps died and they had a later child that isn't recorded in the parish register? Or perhaps she was christened Ellen?

250 George REACH93 ( - ) [1160].

251 Helen93 ( - ) [1161].

Could this be Helen Bain of Wick?

63 Mary SUTHERLAND88 (c. 1833-1920) [489].

Born c. 1833, Caithness. Died 18 Feb 1920, Castletown, Olrig, Caithness. Cause: Valvular disease of heart, old age.

126 Henry SUTHERLAND (1798-1865) [486].

Born 8 Mar 1798, Olrig, Caithness. Died 28 Aug 1865, Castletown, Olrig, Caithness.94 Cause: Arthisis Pulmonalis (3 years).

I suspect he worked at the Flagstone works in Castletown

Recorded as labourer, stoneworks in 1841 census

Recorded as labourer in 1851 census.

Also recorded in 1851 census living with them on Castletown Sibmister Road is a grand-daughter, Elisabeth McKay, age 1, born in Olrig.
Presumably a lodger, George Hercus, a mason age 40 is recorded at the same address in 1841 census

Death register entry records him as stone dresser and his father as mason (master).

252 Henry SUTHERLAND94 ( - ) [1138].

Marr Jean LYALL.

253 Jean LYALL94 ( - ) [1139].

Born.

Various spellings of both first and last names! Jean, Jane Leal and Lyall.

127 Ann FLETT53,94,95 (1799-aft1865) [485].

Born 27 Nov 1799, Stromness, Orkney. Died aft 1865.

1851 census gives age as 51 and place of birth as Orkney.
1841 census gives age as 40 and birthplace as outside of county.

This makes the most likely candidates for parents as John Flett and Molly Card - place of birth being Stromness in 1799 - which funnily enough is Mabel's suggested date!

Note on Marriage to Henry SUTHERLAND: There is a marriage of an Ann Flett to Hendrey Sutherland in 1819 in Firth and Stennes on Orkney. This is so far the only possibility I've found.

254 John FLETT ( - ) [1136].

Marr Molly CARD 10 Jan 1799, Stromness, Orkney.

This is far from certain - they had a daughter called Ann, but it's not necessarily the same person.

255 Molly CARD ( - ) [1137].

This is far from certain.
